Digital Initiatives in Higher Education


The era of digitalization has brought a huge change in the education sector. Various government and non-government bodies are taking steps to promote digital initiatives in education. National Mission on Education through ICT (NMEICT) is a major initiative of the Ministry of Education to improve access to quality content and promote digital education solutions to improve learning outcomes. The use of digital tools is preferred by academics due to the following factors:

  • potency
  • totality
  • employment
  • quality

These digital initiatives have not only improved the teaching-learning process but also increased the retention power of the learners and enabled them to understand the concepts easily.

What is NMEICT?

National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT) is a centrally sponsored scheme launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India in 2009. Leveraging the potential of ICT in the teaching and learning process for the benefit of all learners in higher education institutions anytime, anywhere Method

The Ministry of Education is committed to continue supporting NMEICT to further enhance the use of ICT in higher education. It is expected that this mission will play an important role in achieving the government’s goal of making India a global leader in the field of education.

The major digital initiatives in higher education are:

SWAYAM

SWAYAM (The Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) is an integrated platform to offer cost-saving online courses to young learners. Key facts about yourself are given below

SWAYAM Prabha

Swayam Prabha is an initiative to provide 32 high quality educational channels through DTH (Direct to Home) on 24X7 basis across the country. It has curriculum-based course material covering various subjects. Its main objective is to make quality learning resources accessible in remote areas where internet connectivity is a major challenge. It functions through GSAT-15 satellite.

National Digital Library (NDL)

National Digital Library of India (NDU) is an initiative and platform to create a virtual repository of learning resources with single-window search facility. More than 3 crore digital resources are available on this platform.

  • More than 50 lakh students are registered on this platform.
  • NDL’s mobile app helps users access resources easily.
  • The content covers all major areas of knowledge.
  • It is a 24/7 Umbrella Digital Library

E-WIDWAN

It provides relevant information about the expert’s background, contact address, experience, scholarly publications, skills and achievements, identity of the researcher, etc. It provides information about subject matter experts to potential collaborators, fellows and research scholars across the country. It helps to communicate directly with experts who have the required expertise for research scholars.

National Academic Depository (NAD)

National Academic Depository (NAD) is an initiative to provide an online repository of all academic awards. It is a 24X7 online repository of all academic awards. Certificates, Diplomas, Degrees, Marksheets etc. have been duly digitized and recorded by the educational institutions/boards/assessment bodies. NAD not only assures easy access and retrieval of the academic award but also validates its authenticity and effective storage. The National Academic Depository consists of two interoperable digital depositories. CDSL Ventures Limited (CVL) and NSDL Database Management Limited (NDML).

Free and Open Source Software for Education (FOSSEE)

FOSSEE is a project promoting the use of open-source software in educational institutions. It has been developed by IIT, Bombay. It provides learning materials, such as spoken tutorials, documentation, such as textbook companions, and awareness programs such as conferences, training workshops, and internships.

About 2,000 college students and teachers have participated in this activity and about 1,000 TBCs (textbook companions) have been prepared in SciLab and made open for free download of various software.

virtual lab

This project aims to design fully interactive laboratories with simulated environments to conduct experiments, collect data and answer questions to evaluate the understanding of acquired knowledge to achieve the objectives of modern education. There are about 225 such labs. It is essential to develop virtual laboratories with state-of-the-art computer simulation technology to create real-world environments and problem-solving capabilities.

Shodhganga

Shodhganga is an open-access ETD (Electronic Thesis Depository) of Indian theses and dissertations. This helps in avoiding duplication of research. Thesis and dissertation work. Some important facts about Shodhganga are as follows:

  • It is a digital repository of theses and dissertations submitted to universities in India.
  • Collection of 3880+ theses and dissertations
  • 70 universities are tied together and 62 universities are contributors.
  • Submission of PhD thesis is mandatory through Gazette Notification of UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of M.Phil/Ph.D. Degree, Regulation, 2009)

Shodhgangotri

“Shodhgangotri” is an initiative for Research Scholars/Research Supervisors in Universities where they can submit an electronic version of the approved abstract provided by Research Scholars to the Universities to register themselves for the PhD programme. This repository highlights the trends and directions of research being conducted in Indian universities. Furthermore, it avoids duplication of research.

e-shodhsindhu

The e-Shodhsindhu initiative provides over 15,000 international electronic journals and e-books to all higher education institutions. It provides the user with access to the world’s best educational resources through digital mode. This scheme is implemented by INFLIBNET, Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
