NCTE to resume a one -year bed from 2026

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has announced a major change for teacher education in India. After nearly a decade, the NCTE will re-present a one-year Bachelor of Education (B.ED) program, effective from the academic year, 2026–27. This change marks a significant departure from the two -year BED courses launched in 2014, providing a more flexible route for aspirational teachers. This step corresponds to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to provide several options for individuals to enter the teaching profession.

NCTE to resume a one -year bed from 2026

The one -year B.Ed program was a long feature of India’s teacher education system until it was extended to two years under the 2014 rules. The change came as part of the effort to make teacher training professional and includes additional modules such as yoga education and sex studies. However, questions have been raised due to concerns about the effects of vacant seats and syllabus on the effectiveness of the two -year B.Ed program.

The decision to return to NCTE’s one -year program lies in the view of NEP 2020 and University Grants Commission’s National Higher Education Qualification Infrastructure. This policy allows for a one -year master’s degree at a level of 6.5, aligning with the intentions of NCTE to offer stringent training yet for potential teachers.

Additionally, a one -year BED program has been resumed, who have completed four years of bachelor’s degree or postgraduate qualification, while students with a three -year bachelor’s degree still carry forward two years of course. May need it. NCTE also offers a one -year med course.

Who will be eligible for one year bed course?

Eligibility for a one -year B.Ed course will be limited to candidates who have already completed a four -year graduate program or postgraduate degree. This targeted approach ensures that only a person with sufficient academic background can enroll in this condensed special program.

For people with a three -year bachelor’s degree, a two -year B.Ed course will be a standard route for teacher certification. This difference allows the NCTE to complete a wide range of individuals interested in making a career in teaching, from fresh graduates to professionals to switch career.

The one -year course will provide expertise at various educational levels, such as fundamental, initial, middle and secondary school education, according to NEP’s new school education structure.

Why is one year bed course being resumed after a year?

The revival of a one-year B.Ed course comes after a period of evaluation by NCTE, which found that the extended two-year-old program did not make the expected improvement in teacher education. Despite the efforts to make the course professional, such as introducing 20-week internships and new theme modules, many institutions faced challenges such as under-anrolement and lack of effective course updates.

NCTE President, Pankaj Arora, said the two -year MED program introduced in 2015, failed to meet expectations, several seats were vacated and the course was not developed as required. The new one-year-old B.Ed program, while low, will include a more concentrated approach with expertise in various school levels, aims to better prepare teachers for the developed demands of modern classes.

Additionally, changes align with the vision of flexible teaching routes of NEP 2020, offering several routes in teaching based on a person’s educational background and career stage. Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is another important step in this direction, which provides a four -year course for students just after school.

conclusion

Reproduction of NCTE’s one -year BED program is an important moment in India’s teacher education scenario. By offering a condensed yet special course, NCTE wants to equip the educational routes to equip them better aspirations with those skills. As such a policy continues to develop, it would be important to monitor the quality of the teacher and its impact on the broad educational system. A year -old B.Ed with other initiatives such as Itep, provides a promising future for those entering the profession in different stages of their academic journey.
