New definition of MSME: The amount of investment and annual turnover for new businesses in manufacturing and service sectors are similar, thereby eliminating the gap between these two sectors.

Role of MSME in Indian economy

In 1961, by merging the Ministry of Small Scale Industries and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Industries; The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (M/o MSME) was formed.

MSMEs produce and manufacture a wide variety of products for domestic and international markets. MSMEs also help in the development of Khadi, Village and Coir industries with the help of concerned ministries, state governments and stakeholders.

The data given in the table below is according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MOSPI).

Under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, the Government of India established the National Board for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (NBMSME) to examine the factors affecting the growth of MSMEs. This board reviews the existing policies for the development of MSME sector i.e. finds out what is lacking in the plan and where improvements are needed and gives suggestions to the government.
