  • Story of Lord Krishna and Subhadra: According to this story, after Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura, he met his sister Subhadra. Overjoyed at her brother’s return, Subhadra welcomed him warmly, decorated her house with flowers, prepared a feast and performed his tilak ceremony. This gesture marked the beginning of Bhai Dooj, which symbolizes a sister’s love and prayer for her brother’s well-being.
  • Story of Yama and Yamuna: Another story tells of Yama, the god of death, meeting his sister Yamuna after many years. Yamuna had long been looking forward to her brother’s visit, and when he finally arrived on the Dwitiya of Kartika month, she welcomed him very lovingly and performed his tilak ceremony. Touched by her affection, Yama declared that whichever brother received a tilak from his sister on this day would be blessed with long life and prosperity. Thus, Bhai Dooj is also known as Yamadvitiya.
