WBSSC to seek legal advice on WB teacher recruit


In view of the Supreme Court’s 25,000+ teaching and cancellation of non-teaching appointments, the West Bengal School Services Commission (WBSSC) has announced that it cannot complete a new recruitment process within three months. WBSSC President Siddharth Majumdar said that the Commission will now seek legal advice on the eligibility of candidates for the upcoming recruitment.

Following the Supreme Court’s directive on 4 April 2025, the WBSSC is preparing to take the latest exam. However, the Commission is uncertain whether only “unpublished” candidates or new applicants will be eligible to appear. Siddharth Majumdar said that legal consultation is necessary for teaching and non-teaching positions before proceeding with new written tests.

In the 2016 recruitment drive, about 26 lakh candidates applied, and about 23 lakh appeared for the examination. Among them, there were aspirations of teachers for class 9-10 for 1.41 lakh classes and about 1.5 lakhs for classes 11-12, while the rest applied for non-teaching roles.

The Supreme Court mentioned that the 2016 recruitment process was “deliberately compromised,” WBSSC allegedly covered irregularities. The court emphasized that “unpublished” candidates can re -apply through their respective departments, which should process applications within three months. WBSSC will soon release fresh recruitment for teaching and non-teaching positions.

West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu confirmed that the government would follow the court order. CM Mamta Banerjee also expressed support for eligible candidates and called a meeting with the affected teachers on 7 April 2025. Meanwhile, opposition parties have blamed the state government and WBSSC for irregularities.

As the WBSSC is ready for legal consultation and a fresh recruitment campaign, the state education system is under stress, with more than 25,000 school staff now off-duty due to the Supreme Court’s decision.
