The Delhi government has recently proposed to take a major step to control pollution in the capital and promote electric vehicles (EVS). Under the Draft Ev Policy 2.0, it has been recommended to ban vehicles powered by petrol, diesel and CNG.
This policy is made aimed at completely changing the transport sector of Delhi. In this article, we will discuss the main points of this proposed policy, its impact and the thinking behind it.

Why is the ban being proposed?
In view of the increasing pollution in Delhi, the government has decided to take this step. Air quality is being severely affected due to vehicles powered by petrol, diesel and CNG. The purpose of this policy is:
- Reducing pollution: promoting electric vehicles by removing Fossil Fuel-Driven vehicles.
- Use of clean energy: prioritizing battery-driven vehicles.
- Environmental Protection: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Major changes under draft EV policy
Only electric vehicle is allowed (EV push)
Under EV Policy 2.0, all new CNG auto-rickshaw registration will be banned. Old CNG autos whose age is over 10 years will be converted into battery-driven vehicles.
Petrol, diesel, and CNG two-wheelers ban
From 2026, two -wheelers operating from petrol, diesel and CNG will be completely banned. This rule will apply to both individual and commercial vehicles.
Cargo carrier restriction
Registration of diesel, petrol or CNG three-wheeler vehicles will be stopped from August 2025.
Garbage collection vehicle infection
The garbage collection vehicles used by government bodies will also be converted into electrical options in a phased manner.
Benefits of EV Policy Implementation
There will be many benefits with the implementation of this policy:
- Better air quality: Pollution levels will decrease.
- Health Benefits: There will be a decrease in respiratory diseases.
- Modern Transport System: More electric vehicles will appear on Delhi’s roads.
- Energy Savings: Fossil Fuels consumption will be low.
Challenges in implementation
Although this policy has many advantages, there are some challenges in implementing it:
- Infrastructure deficiency: There are not enough EV charging stations.
- Cost issue: Battery-driven vehicles cost high.
- Effect on employment: It can have a negative impact on auto drivers and small businesses.
- Public response: It may take time to accept this change.
Public reactions and worries
The draft of the policy has sparked discussion on social media and other platforms. Some people consider it a positive step for the environment while others are calling it “undemocratic”.
Future approach
This step of the Delhi government can be important towards making the capital a green and sustainable city. However, this will require strong infrastructure and public support.
Rejuvenation
This policy is currently in the draft stage and it will be implemented only after being approved by the Delhi Cabinet. Some changes are possible in this.
