Reading Comprehension (RC) is one of the most important and scoring classes in the IBPS PO exam, especially in the English language section of both prelims and the main. It evaluates the ability of a candidate to understand, interpret and analyze the written material. Unlike the vocabulary or grammar questions, the RC route tests the core understanding skills, which requires the candidates to master both accuracy and speed. With rising competition and a tight time window, it is important to score the right strategies to deal with RC questions.
Understanding reading for IBPS PO exam
In prelims, the RC routes are usually factual and ranges from 150 to 250 words, followed by 5-7 questions. In the main, the routes are long, more analytical, and often based on subjects such as economics, current affairs, or social issues, with 7–10 questions per route. Questions can test direct understanding, inference, vocabulary, tone and important argument. Thus, a combination of reading speed, depth of understanding and logical argument is necessary to succeed.
Read tips for understanding for IBPS PO exam
1. Read first questions (in some cases): In time-bound exam, reading questions before the route can help to identify what information to see. This is particularly helpful for factual questions. However, for estimated-based or tone questions, it is better to read the first full route for the appropriate reference.
2. Improve reading speed with daily practice: Develop daily editorial, opinion column and business news habit. Focus on topics that usually appear in the RC route, such as banking, economy, environment and social issues. Over time, it will promote both speed and familiarity with RC themes.
3. Avoid beliefs: Make your answers strictly the basis on the information given in the route. Even if a statement is factually correct outside the passage is correct, it cannot be considered correct until the path is supported by the passage.
4. Practice findings and tone-based questions: They are mangoes and are often the most difficult. To master them, learn to differentiate between literal meaning and inherent ideas. Pay attention to the intention of the author – whether the vowel is satirical, critical, neutral or optimistic.
5. Highlight the major points while reading: Mentally or physically (in mock), keywords, infections or data underline. This will help you find the answer quickly without re -reading the entire content.
General Question Type in IBPS PO RC section
Understanding this type helps in pre-completion how to complete various questions within the RC set.
- Factory questions: Answering directly on the route.
- Estimate-based questions: Logical cuts are required.
- Vocabulary-in-context: Meaning of words/phrases based on passed use.
- Tone and Theme Questions: Ask the author’s attitude or main idea.
- Title Selection: The most suitable title for the given passage.
Practice and fake tests are important for RC
Consistent practice is the only way to be better in understanding reading. Solve at least 2-3 RC route per day and analyze your mistakes. Initially pay attention to more accuracy than just speed. Over time, fake tests will help you balance both. In addition, carefully review the answer explanation to understand the argument behind the correct options.
