UGC NET Junior Research Fellowship Objectives

UGC NET JRF Eligibility Criteria

  • Age Limit: The age of the candidate should be less than 30 years as on 1st January of the year in which the UGC NET JRF examination is conducted. Candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC/ST and PWD categories are given a relaxation of 5 years. The age limit to apply for UGC NET JRF for general category candidates is 30 years.
  • Educational qualification: Candidate must have Master’s degree or equivalent in the relevant field with at least 55% aggregate marks (50% for candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC/ST and PWD categories). Candidates who are in the final year of their Master’s degree or equivalent can also apply, subject to certain conditions.
  • Minimum qualifying marks: To be eligible for the UGC NET JRF programme, a candidate must obtain a minimum of 55% aggregate marks (50% for candidates belonging to OBC-NCL, SC/ST and PWD categories) in the UGC NET JRF examination.
  • Eligibility for Assistant Professor: Candidates who do not qualify for the UGC NET JRF program but score minimum qualifying marks in the UGC NET JRF examination are eligible for the post of Assistant Professor in Indian universities and colleges.

UGC NET JRF Financial Aid

UGC NET Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) program provides financial assistance to selected candidates to support their research work and pursue PhD degree. Financial assistance includes, apart from monthly stipend, contingency grant, house rent allowance (HRA), medical benefits and professional development opportunities.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

DA or Dearness Allowance is a fixed percentage of the salary, which is provided to government employees. Its purpose is to keep up with inflation for employees. JRF, SRF and RA are also entitled to DA. As per Central Government the revised DA rate is 50% which will be provided to the UGC NET JRF qualified candidate.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

Research Scholars are provided hostel accommodation wherever available. It is worth noting that no HRA is given to research fellows living in hostels. If hostel accommodation is not available, Research Fellows are entitled to HRA as per Central Government norms depending on their location/city.

Research Associates and Research Fellows are provided medical allowance as applicable to the institution to which they are attached. JRF fellows are eligible for medical benefits as per UGC norms.

JRF and SRF are entitled to casual leaves; However, the leaves of the research associate are determined by the host institution. With due approval from the host institutions, Fellows will be allowed to participate in scientific events/workshops conducted in India and abroad and will be considered “on duty”. Participation in the above journeys for scientific programmes/workshops is the same as before in 2nd AC by rail. As per government guidelines, maternity leave will be issued to female candidates in all categories.
