UGC NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to determine the eligibility of candidates for Assistant Professorship and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. . The exam pattern of UGC NET exam is given below.
- Method of Examination: UGC NET is a computer-based test (CBT), which means candidates will take the test on a computer at a designated test centre.
- Number of Papers: UGC NET is divided into two papers: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both the papers are conducted in two different sessions on the same day.
- Paper 1: General Paper on Teaching and Research Aptitude:
- Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes)
- Number of questions: 50
- Total Marks: 100
- Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
- Syllabus: This paper assesses the candidates’ teaching and research aptitude, reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness. It includes topics like teaching methods, communication, reasoning, data interpretation, etc.
- Paper 2: Subject-Specific Paper:
- Duration: 3 hours (180 minutes)
- Number of questions: 100
- Total Marks: 200
- Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
- Syllabus: This paper is based on the subject chosen by the candidate. The questions are designed to test the candidate’s in-depth knowledge of the subject. The syllabus of Paper 2 is based on the subject chosen by you during the application process.
- marking scheme: Each question in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 carries 2 marks. There is no negative marking for wrong answers.
- Language: UGC NET question paper is available in both English and Hindi. Candidates can choose their preferred language.
- Cut-off Criteria: To qualify for Assistant Professor, candidates need to secure minimum cut-off marks in each paper. For eligibility for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor, candidates must pass both the papers and also secure the required cut-off marks.
- Validity of UGC NET Certificate: The validity of UGC NET certificate for Assistant Professor is for life time. However, the validity for JRF is three years, during which the candidates are eligible to receive fellowship from the UGC.
