How to calculate UGC Pure Political Science?

UGC NET is determined based on the candidate’s performance in both political science cut-off Paper I (General Paper) And Letter II (Political Science)Cut-off marks are minimum qualifying marks that candidates will have to score to be eligible for JRF (Junior Research Fellowship) or Assistant Professor or PhD admission posts. The calculation process follows specific stages, which are explained below.

Step 1: Understanding the marking plan

  • Paper I (General Paper on Teaching and Research Qualification) – 50 questions, 100 marks
  • Letter II (Political Science subject) – 100 questions, 200 marks
  • total marks = 100 (Paper I) + 200 (Paper II) = 300 digits

Step 2: Minimum qualification mark

According to UGC criteria, candidates will get at least the following minimum marks to qualify:

  • normal range: 40% overall in both papers
  • OBC (NCL) / SC / ST / PWD Categories: 35% overall in both papers

Step 3: Determination of category-wise cut off

Cut-off marks are determined on this basis:

  1. Total number of candidates seen in political science
  2. Total available JRF and Assistant Professor Slot

Step 4: Sutras to calculate UGC net cut off

The official cut-off is calculated using percentage-based generalization:

Formula: Percent = (Number of candidates who scored less than the total number of candidates/candidates less than the YOTOTAL number) × 100

For JRF eligibility, only head 6% Eligible candidates are selected.

Example calculation

Suppose 50,000 candidates appeared for UGC Net Political Science, and you scored 190 out of 300 marks,

  1. If 40,000 candidates scored below you, then: (40,000/50,000) × 100 = 80% percent
